Nawaz won't succeed in getting re-elected as PM: Khurshid Shah

SUKKUR: Opposition Leader and senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Khurshid Shah on Sunday said that Nawaz Sharif will not succeed in getting re-elected as the prime minister.

"He [Nawaz] has succeeded in becoming his party's [Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz] president again but he won't be able to get re-elected as the prime minister," Shah said while addressing a rally in Sukkur.

He added that a clash between institutions is a threat to the state.

"The PPP has tried to fulfil all the requirements of democracy and it will continue to support democracy," the opposition leader said.    

In an earlier statement, Shah had taken an opposite position to Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal's statement that the Director-General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) should refrain from commenting on the country's economy.

"Everyone, from a common man to the army chief, has the right to comment on the economy," he said on October 14. 

Speaking to media in Rohri, Shah said that there is nothing wrong with the army chief commenting on the state of the economy since he was the “commander-in-chief” of the army. A weakened economy means a weakened army, he said.

He also commented on the scuffle outside accountability court ahead of indictment proceedings against the Sharif family, and said that the incident "should open the eyes of every Pakistan as to where we going as a nation". 

The opposition leader added that the PPP was working to ensure that institutions in the country are not at loggerheads, and advised the PML-N and other politicians to do the same.
